The African Philanthropist

The prevalent image of Africa in the Western world often revolves around poverty and despair, captured in the poignant image of a child with torn clothes and bare feet, desperately seeking relief. However, there is a side to Africa that remains largely unnoticed—the spirit of philanthropy that runs deep within its communities.

This article explores the untold narrative of African philanthropy, shedding light on its diverse forms and its potential to become a global centre for charitable endeavours.

In this pursuit, ShareLovv International is leading the charge, employing faith diplomacy to match communities in need with non-state actors

Many in the West may not readily associate Africa with philanthropy, primarily due to the overshadowing narrative of poverty and need. However, a closer look reveals a vibrant tradition of giving back to the community, often extending beyond familial circles.

Challenging Perceptions Beyond Bad PR
The question is not whether Africans are capable of being philanthropists, but rather what forms of philanthropy are prevalent on the continent. Shifting the narrative from one of deprivation to one of empowerment is essential for recognizing and fostering the positive impact African philanthropists can have on their communities and beyond.

Remittances – A silent force in African philanthropy
One example of the diverse forms that philanthropy can occupy in Africa is Remittances. Did you know that in every single capital in the world, there is a huge and growing African presence? These individuals and groups count for a large percentage of the working and entrepreneurial population. And so it is no surprise that many of these individuals who’ve left their homes in search of better opportunities make it a habit to send money back home. Here are some figures to reflect the sheer size of that- in 2022, remittances to Nigeria alone accounted for a staggering 38% ($20.1 billion) of total remittance inflows to Sub-Saharan Africa. Countries like Ghana and Kenya received $4.7 billion and $4.1 billion, respectively. These financial transfers often serve as a lifeline for many households, reaching far beyond nuclear family circles to support extended family members, provide education fees, and medical care, and even contribute to community development and occasions like weddings and funerals.

A second source of philanthropy and one that is often overlooked is the philanthropy stemming out of religious institutions. Many large denominations, Christian and Muslim, boast foundations that actively engage in charitable initiatives, such as building schools, clinics, hospitals, orphanages, and more. These institutions play a crucial role in shaping the philanthropic landscape of the continent.

Potential for African Philanthropy

COVID-19 was a game changer it was reported that African philanthropists and largely non-state actors, gave seven times the average number of large gifts than for the previous decade, a total of $270M in value was donated by Africans in Africa for Africans. Although a majority of this was local giving, meaning the support hardly left the boundaries of the local community, this begs the question of how and if this should enter regional or international communities and what impact that may have on a wider aspect

The question lingers: Can Africa become a global centre for philanthropy?
